1 (Blog Activity)

Today at our language lab, you are required to complete the following 3 tasks:
If you finished all 3 tasks before the end of language lab session, please work on
task # 4 as well.

Read the blog entry posted by Kaku-sensei, titled "私の近所(きんじょ)"
(my neighborhood).
Please leave your comment in Japanese after you've read it.

*IMPORTANT*
The computers at language lab do not allow us to type in Japanese.
As an alternative, please go to this website:

http://www.whiteagle.net/

and type your comment in Romaji here first.

After you've done typing your comment, please copy your text
and paste it to the blog entry you read. Do not worry about using kanji for now.

Go to your own blog and write a short paragraph about your neighborhood in
日本語

*IMPORTANT*
Again, the computers at language lab do not allow us to type in Japanese.
As an alternative, please go to this website:

http://www.whiteagle.net/

and type your blog entry in Romaji here first.

After you've done typing your whole blog entry, please copy your text
and paste it to your own blog posting page. Do not worry about using kanji for
this blog entry.

* Use various location nouns (ex.

Please comment on the blogs of your classmates (at least three).

* Try to write at least one sentence/question in Japanese in your comments.

Please comment on the blogs of other Japanese language students in the United States. To see other school's blogs, click "ともだちをつくろう (Let's make friends)" on the right-hand side of this page.

You can find 5 different schools (including CUNY City College) who are doing Japanese blog project this semester.

For this class, I would like you to create your own Japanese blog because it provides a place:

1. To share/express your happiness, surprise, excitement, and/or frustration, as well as any questions you might have, while learning the Japanese language (or any other topics).

• While studying new grammar and words is very important when learning a language, it is equally important to actually use the language in a real life context. You must not wait to express yourself only when you think you have mastered the language because language learning is basically an ongoing process.

2. To communicate with your classmates and other people outside of class.

• Language learning is not limited to what you do for the course but also includes what you do and experience outside the class. For this project I will ask you to form a group with three or four students. The purpose of the group is to encourage and monitor each other (e.g., commenting on your group members’ blogs). I will ask you to change groups once or twice during the semester.

• I know that your Japanese language is still limited, but you can convey your intended meaning more effectively by utilizing other resources such as pictures and videos. Remember that people utilize not only language but also other resources such as tone of your voice, music, body language, picture, color, font style and size for communication.

• I will also create links to your classmates' blogs as well as blogs created by other Japanese language students from other schools, so you can see what other people think and feel about Japanese language learning (as well as other topics). You are also encouraged to leave comments on these blogs.

3. To reflect (or evaluate) what you have done so far.

• Sometimes it is challenging to see our own progress or growth. Blogs help you to reflect and see how much your Japanese writing ability has improved throughout the semester.

• At the end of the semester your blog will be evaluated by the instructor, your classmates, other people (ex. other Japanese language instructors), as well as yourself. We will discuss the criteria of evaluation later. (--weights 5% of your final grade)

***Important Things to Keep in Mind****:

• If you would like to keep a low profile about yourself on your blogging space, you may choose to use a pseudonym for posting your blog entry. There is absolutely NO NEED to reveal your personal information.

• If you plan to upload your friends’ photos on your blog in the future, please be sure to check with them first to see if they permit you to do so.

• If you plan to use images taken from someone else’s website, please be sure to write down where this image was taken from and give a photo credit to the website owner in your blog entry. Your instructor will not be responsible for any consequences resulting from your failure to include photo credit in your blog entry.

• When you leave comments on your classmates’ blogs, please DO NOT write anything that might be hurtful or disruptive to your classmates. Although this project will be conducted outside of class, I urge everyone to help me ensure the quality of our blogging space so that we can provide a peaceful and productive online learning environment for everyone in the class.

• Please do not hesitate to email me for any further questions.

-- I look forward to reading everyone’s blog entry soon! ☺
